UK imposes Visa requirement on Trinidad and Tobago Nationals

The United Kingdom (UK) Home Office in Trindad and Tobago has revoked the visa-free travel exemption for visitors from Trinidad and Tobago, requiring them to obtain a visa before entry. The change, on Wednesday 12 March, took effect immediately, replacing the previous system that allowed entry with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

The UK government said the decision was made in response to a sharp rise in asylum claims from Trinidad and Tobago nationals. Between 2015 and 2019, the UK received an average of 49 asylum applications annually from Trinidad and Tobago. However, in 2024, that number surged to 439—an almost nine-fold increase.

British High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Jon Dean, stated, “There has been a significant increase in the number of Trinidad and Tobago nationals coming to the UK as visitors only to claim asylum on arrival, which constitutes a misuse of our immigration system.”

The policy change aligns with the UK’s broader efforts to strengthen border controls and regulate migration more effectively.

A transition period is in place for travellers who secured an ETA before 12 March 2025. They will be allowed to enter the UK without a visa until 23 April 2025. After this date, all Trinidad and Tobago nationals must obtain a visa before travelling.

Those transiting through the UK must also apply for a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV), bringing Trinidad and Tobago in line with other visa-required nations under UK immigration law.

Despite criticism, British High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Jon Dean, defended the move, stating: “The introduction of visitor visas is designed to support safe and secure travel while ensuring the UK’s borders remain protected.”

Frequent travellers, including business professionals, students, and those visiting family, will need to adjust to longer processing times and visa fees. The Home Office advises affected individuals to apply early and use priority visa services where available.

Visa Application Process applicants must submit:

          •        A completed online application form

          •        Supporting documents proving the purpose of travel, financial means, and ties to Trinidad and Tobago

          •        Payment of the visa fee

          •        Biometric information (fingerprints and photograph)

Processing times vary, and travellers are urged to apply well in advance.
