Notting Hill Carnival 2026: The Complete Guide

Notting Hill Carnival returns to the streets of west London from Sunday 30 to Monday 31 August 2026, and this year there is an extra reason to celebrate as Carnival marks its 60th anniversary – its Diamond Jubilee.

For six decades, Notting Hill Carnival has brought Caribbean culture to the streets of London through mas, steelpan, calypso, soca, sound systems, food and community.

WHEN IS NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL 2026?

Notting Hill Carnival takes place across the August Bank Holiday weekend:

Saturday 29 August 2026 – Panorama
The weekend begins with the UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition.

Sunday 30 August 2026 – Children’s Day
Sunday features J’Ouvert, the opening ceremony, Children’s Day Parade, Adults Dutty Mas, sound systems and stages.

Monday 31 August 2026 – Adults Day
Monday brings the main Adults Day Parade alongside sound systems and stages.

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL 2026 SCHEDULE

Saturday 29 August – Panorama

Carnival weekend begins with the sound of steelpan.

The UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition takes place at Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park.

Panorama is one of the highlights of the Carnival weekend, bringing some of Britain’s leading steel orchestras together for an evening of competition and celebration.

Unlike the street Carnival on Sunday and Monday, Panorama is a ticketed event.

SUNDAY 30 AUGUST – CHILDREN’S DAY

Sunday starts early.

6am–9am – J’Ouvert
J’Ouvert is the traditional early-morning celebration that signals the beginning of Carnival Sunday.

10am–10.30am – Opening Ceremony
The official opening ceremony takes place on Great Western Road by the Judging Zone.

10.30am–5pm – Children’s Day Parade and Carnival
Young masqueraders take to the streets in a colourful celebration of Carnival culture.

10.30am–7.00pm – Adults Dutty Mas
Adults also join Sunday’s celebrations with Dutty Mas; you can find Soca News on the road with ABIR, Colours and Lagniappe and there is still time to get your Dutty Mas package.

12pm–7pm – Sound Systems
The sound systems come alive across the Carnival area.
Reggae, dancehall, soca, calypso, house, dub, jungle and much more can be heard throughout the streets.

3pm – Moment of Reflection
Carnival will observe a 72-second silence in remembrance of the 72 lives lost in the Grenfell Tower fire, members of the community who have passed and Carnival pioneers who helped establish its legacy.

MONDAY 31 AUGUST – ADULTS DAY

Monday is the main Carnival parade day.

10.30am–7.00pm – Adults Day Parade and Carnival

Mas bands and masqueraders take to the road with costumes that have taken months – and in some cases much of the year – to create.

Expect a spectacular display of colour, feathers, music and Caribbean Carnival artistry.

12pm–7pm – Sound Systems
The sound systems return for another full afternoon.

3pm – Moment of Reflection
The 72-second silence will again be observed.

8.30pm onwards – Judging Zone
Carnival activity continues around the Judging Zone.

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL CELEBRATES 60 YEARS

Notting Hill Carnival 2026 isn’t just another Carnival.

It’s the Diamond Jubilee.

The story reaches back to 1966, when resident and social worker Rhaune Laslett organised a children’s street party intended to bring together a community affected by racial tension, conflict and poor housing.

Russell Henderson’s steelband was invited to perform and, as the musicians moved through the streets with their pans, people followed.

That spontaneous procession became part of the story from which today’s Notting Hill Carnival developed.

Sixty years later, Carnival remains a celebration of Caribbean culture, creativity, resistance, community and togetherness.

WHERE DOES NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL TAKE PLACE?

Carnival takes place across the streets of Notting Hill and surrounding areas of west London, including parts of Kensington and Westminster.

If you haven’t been before, don’t expect a festival contained inside one park.

Carnival is on the streets.

The parade route, sound systems, food stalls, stages and Carnival-goers transform the neighbourhood.

HOW TO GET TO NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL 2026

Public transport is strongly recommended.

TfL recommends Paddington as one of the easier approaches, followed by walking into the Carnival area using the signed route.

Several stations operate differently during Carnival weekend, so don’t automatically head for Notting Hill Gate simply because you’re going to Notting Hill Carnival.

Station restrictions can include Ladbroke Grove, Notting Hill Gate, Westbourne Park, Holland Park, Queensway and Royal Oak.

Always check the latest TfL information before travelling, as crowd-management measures can change during Carnival.

IS NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL FREE?

Yes.

The street Carnival on Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August is free to attend.

You don’t need a ticket to enter the Carnival area on Sunday or Monday.

Saturday’s UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition is a ticketed event.

SOUND SYSTEMS AT NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

Sound system culture is one of the foundations of Notting Hill Carnival.

Across Sunday and Monday, static sound systems transform streets into open-air parties.

For 2026, the official programme has sound systems operating:

12pm–7pm Sunday
12pm–7pm Monday

CALYPSO AT NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

Calypso is just as important to the history and cultural foundations of Carnival.

In the build-up to the 60th anniversary, Carnival Village Trust and the UK Calypso & Soca Collective have been staging a programme at The Tabernacle celebrating both soca and calypso and highlighting UK-based Caribbean musical talent.

FIRST TIME AT NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL?

A few simple things can make your first Carnival much easier:

• Wear comfortable shoes – expect plenty of walking.
• Bring a portable phone charger.
• Arrange a meeting point with friends in case mobile networks become congested.
• Don’t rely on one Tube station for getting home.
• Check travel information before leaving.
• Carry only what you need.
• Stay hydrated.
• Respect the residents whose streets host Carnival.
• Give yourself plenty of time to travel.
• Most importantly, come ready to experience Carnival.
